DescriptionSalary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
This role oversees the comprehensive management of athletic equipment and uniforms for all teams, including purchasing, inventory, maintenance, laundry, distribution, and disposal, while ensuring safety, compliance, and cost-effective operations. The position supervises and trains staff and student workers, develops and enforces equipment room policies and procedures, coordinates equipment needs for home and away events, and manages transportation and setup. Acting as a liaison with manufacturers, vendors, coaches, and student-athletes, the role ensures the selection of safe, high-performing equipment and apparel, maintains compliance with NCAA, MVC, and NOCSAE standards, and oversees inventory tracking and budget management. Additional responsibilities include monitoring vehicle registration, overseeing ordering and branding compliance, maintaining proper equipment care and sanitation practices, and ensuring secure, efficient facility operations in support of all intercollegiate sports.
Examples of Duties
Coordinates the management and supervision of the purchase, inventory, assembly, marking, maintenance, repair, laundry, distribution and disposal of department athletic equipment and uniforms for all teams. Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, terminates, and assigns work to staff and student workers to accomplish this task for the safety and welfare of the student-athletes and public.
Directs the development and implementation of equipment room policies and procedures for issuing equipment and federal tax policies, inventory control, access to the equipment room, and laundry room scheduling. Keeps staff/student-athletes informed of policies and procedures to ensure the safe and proper functioning of equipment.
Promote cost effective utilization of equipment and wearing apparel, and operate facilities in an efficient and professional manner.
Coordinate the preparation and maintenance of equipment and athletic apparel for all sports for home events as well as, equipment needs for away events. Plans, coordinates, and travel when necessary, the transportation of equipment to and from away athletic events, supervises and directs staff and student workers in the loading of equipment and set-up of equipment and to ensure equipment is safe for use by student-athletes.
Act as liaison with equipment manufacturers, vendors, coaches, student athletes in selection of new, higher performing and safer sports equipment, shoes, and apparel. Meets with manufacturers, coaches and student-athletes prior to purchase of sports equipment, shoes and apparel for the safety and welfare of the student-athlete and public. Responsible for maintaining and balancing annual Equipment Room budgets.
Monitor the motor vehicle registration program for the vehicles used by the equipment room and leased or owned by SIU.
Maintain the system for inventory of equipment and supplies for all intercollegiate sports to track the issuance, return, and eventual disposal of equipment and supplies.
Monitor and oversees all uniform, equipment and apparel ordering to ensure compliance with restrictions on numbers, logos, and script as governed by NCAA and MVC Conference regulations.
Maintains equipment program in accordance with the National Operating Committee for Standard of Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) specifications.
Knowledge or proper use, care and fit of all types of athletic equipment and wearing apparel, including but not limited to the repair, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment and uniforms. Understanding of laundry chemicals and products that best sanitize equipment and apparel.
Possess an awareness of security office procedures concerning facility and conduct of events; and a basic understanding of the rules and nature of the multiple varsity sports offered at SIU.
Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree.
2. A total of three (3) years (36 months) of work experience in the supervision and management of athletic equipment.*
3. Athletic Equipment Manager's Associates (AEMA) certified or certifiable within 12 months of hire.
4. Blood borne pathogens certification.
5. CPR/First Aid certification.
(Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing: The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination/testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
