Summary
Bus Mechanic is responsible for repairing NJ TRANSIT buses for maintenance work. Conducts a variety of inspections, testing, repairs, installation and maintenance tasks on automotive, mechanical equipment, and machinery. Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Adjust and reline air and hydraulic brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment
- Attach test instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions
- Must be qualified to disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units
- Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition
- Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery
- Must be qualified to install or rebuild diesel engines
- Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves
- Repair and adjust seats, doors, and windows, and install and repair accessories
- Must be qualified to fix and maintain parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems
- Experience using hand tools and power tools as part of daily work routine
- Other duties as directed and or assigned, to include and to ensure the safe operation and efficiency of the department
Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be able to work flexible hours.
- Be able to pass the pre-employment physical and background checks
- Various Positions: 2-15 years automotive or diesel mechanical experience.
- Must be able to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair all vehicles and equipment in service with minimal supervision.
- 609 air conditioning certification and at least three H or T series ASE certifications preferred
- Possess a valid NJ License with the ability to obtain a CDL License with passenger endorsement or possess a valid NY/PA CDL with passenger endorsement
- Have a good driving record with less than five points
