Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo, Texas, in affiliation with the Texas A&M University College of Medicine, invites applications for a full-time faculty psychiatrist position with its new psychiatry residency program, which will welcome its first cohort of residents in July 2028. Shannon is the sole health system serving a 25-county region of West Texas. This is an opportunity to join the founding faculty of a residency program and to shape its clinical services, supervision model, and educational mission from the outset.

The successful candidate will serve as the physician lead for Shannon’s combined consultation-liaison and emergency psychiatry service, which provides psychiatric consultation to medical and surgical inpatient units and psychiatric evaluation in the emergency department, supported by an established advanced-practice provider team. The candidate will develop the consultation-liaison rotation and its supervision structure in advance of the first resident cohort.

Responsibilities

–   Provide and supervise psychiatric consultation in the inpatient medical setting and the emergency department

–   Develop and direct the combined consultation-liaison and emergency psychiatry educational experience for psychiatry residents

–   Supervise, teach, and evaluate residents beginning July 2028

–   Participate in didactics, program committees, and program development

Schedule and coverage

The position is anticipated as a daytime service with no overnight call; after-hours and weekend psychiatric coverage is provided through Shannon’s established coverage model. The schedule structure is flexible and open to discussion with the successful candidate.

Academic appointment

The position carries a faculty appointment through the Texas A&M University College of Medicine at a rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. Faculty participate in resident supervision, didactics, evaluation, and program development alongside clinical practice.

Requirements

Qualifications

–   MD or DO; board certification or board eligibility in psychiatry (ABPN)

–   Unrestricted Texas medical license or eligibility for Texas licensure

–   Experience in consultation-liaison and/or emergency psychiatry; fellowship training in consultation-liaison psychiatry is preferred but not required

–   Demonstrated interest in resident education
