The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is recognized as one of the nation's premier residential STEM high schools. The school offers residential, virtual, and outreach programs to students across the state. GSSM seeks an exceptional engineering instructor to teach advanced high school students in our residential program and outreach initiatives. This is a permanent, full-time position with a 10-month academic appointment beginning fall 2026, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with credentials, experience, and unique capabilities.
Faculty hired in this position will teach in GSSM's Residential Programs, delivering STEM-focused courses to highly motivated 11th and 12th grade residential students at the Hartsville, SC campus. This position requires relocation to South Carolina and is based at the Hartsville campus.
The successful candidate will teach engineering and drone technology courses at a level comparable to undergraduate college courses, modeled on college-like schedules and teaching environments. This position emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning and offers opportunities to develop new courses and projects that align with the instructor's expertise.
Responsibilities of the Instructor of Engineering
Develop course content and methodology to achieve demonstrable student achievement in the area of instruction. Develop a student evaluation system for course content and instructional methods.
Set and maintain appropriate class and/or lab and instruction schedules Explore, develop, and, when appropriate, implement innovative methodology for successful instruction. Work with the Department Chair and/or the VP for Academics in developing, setting, and sharing successful instructional methods.
Work with students in and out of the classroom and counsel students to increase their understanding, comprehension, and effective demonstration of competency in the course(s). Set and maintain appropriate times for students to meet with the instructor to improve competency.
Effectively monitor students' progress, identifying weaknesses and strengths and preparing a program to improve any deficiencies. Report achievements (grades) and academic problem areas in a timely manner as set by the Department Chair and/or the VP for Academics.
Support school activities as a residential learning community by following school guidelines and procedures for all activities.
Work with the Department Chair and/or the VP for Academics in completing GSSM's employee evaluation and faculty growth procedures. As appropriate, support the school's mission as a full-time residential learning community and provider of outreach programs to improve education.
All other duties assigned by the Department Chair and/or the VP for Academics.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Master's degree required with demonstrated successful teaching (1O years sought), preferably teaching advanced students.
Additional Requirements
Excellent communication and motivational skills for high academic results with the target student population. Classroom and student management skills (computer entry, grading, etc.) Ability to work in a virtual, in-person, or hybrid environment.

Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in subject area.
Experience with gifted high school-aged students.
Experience teaching virtually.
