Job Responsibilities:

• The Director of Engineering Design provides strategic leadership for engineering design including master planning, new construction, renovations, and major system upgrades within the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) and JHU School of Medicine (SOM). This role is responsible for healthcare and research labs (computational and wet labs) facilities design development, technical review, and advanced engineering problem-solving to ensure that all building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, medical gas, fire protection, and building automation) meet performance expectations, regulatory requirements (including The Joint Commission, FGI, NFPA, ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170 and AAALAC), and the needs of a complex, mission-critical academic medical center.

• Working in close partnership with the Director of Engineering Operations, the Director of Engineering Design contributes to facility condition assessments and ensures that engineering design decisions are informed by operational performance and long-term asset management considerations. In collaboration with the Director of Engineering Operations, the Executive Director of Healthcare Design and Director SOM Architectural Design, this role leads the ongoing development and refinement of JHHSs and SOMs standard MEP specifications and JHHSs sustainability initiatives. The Director of Engineering Design works closely with internal engineering operational teams and external consultants to ensure consistent implementation of standards across projects. During construction administration and commissioning, the Director partners with Engineering Operations to confirm that design intent is fully realized in the constructed environment.

• The Director of Engineering Design brings deep technical expertise, strong organizational skills, and a collaborative leadership style, along with a comprehensive understanding of healthcare and research facility design. The role is responsible for staffing and budget planning, resource management, and overall team performance. General management duties include supervising staff, planning and scheduling work, managing budgets, analyzing data, preparing reports, and delivering presentations to leadership and stakeholders.

• This position reports to and operates under the minimal supervision of the Vice President, Facilities Planning + Design.

Salary Range:

• $208,000 to $250,000 per year. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. 

Requirements

• Bachelors degree in engineering or related field.
• Masters degree preferred 10 or more years including 7 or more years related work experience in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
• Professional Engineer (PE) preferred
