Citrus Connection was established in 1982 as the public transportation provider for Polk County, Florida, operating under the Lakeland Area Mass Transit District (LAMTD). Over the past four decades, the organization has grown from a local transit system into a regional mobility provider serving communities throughout Central Florida.

In 2015, Citrus Connection expanded its regional presence through the merger with Lakeland Area Mass Transit District (LAMTD), creating a more unified and efficient public transportation network across Polk County. This integration strengthened regional connectivity, enhanced service coordination, and improved access to transportation for residents, workforce commuters, students, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
