Description
The Senior Code Official is responsible for ensuring compliance with all building codes, zoning regulations, and other statutory requirements. This position includes leadership in reviewing construction plans, issuing permits, conducting inspections, and working closely with contractors, architects, and property owners to ensure that all construction projects meet current standards and regulations. It also includes a significant role in policy development, staff training, and public engagement. The Department Manager provides general direction. The employee is expected to work with minimal direct supervision, exercising independent judgment and initiative in several complex, responsible, and sensitive areas while representing clients and SDE, Inc.

Certification as a Building Official from a recognized national or state accreditation body.
Strong knowledge of building codes, construction practices, and inspection methods.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to read and interpret complex building plans and specifications.
Strong organizational skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office™ software tools.
Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are required for frequent travel to project sites, client meetings, and other off-site engagements.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Five (5) years of experience in Code Enforcement is preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS:
Building Code Official Certifications for Residential and Commercial Plan Review and Inspection.
A valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania driver’s license is required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interpret and enforce provisions of local, state, and national building codes.
Conduct field inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects.
Review and approve building plans and specifications for code compliance.
Issue building permits and provide guidance on compliance issues.
Coordinate with other departments and agencies involved in building construction and land development.
Maintain accurate records of inspections, permits issued, and code enforcement activities.
Provide technical assistance and advice to property owners, contractors, and the public regarding building codes and compliance procedures.
Participate in the development and revision of building codes and ordinances.
Demonstrated knowledge of municipal planning and building codes.
Communicate and consult with Township or Borough staff, citizens, consultants, developers, suppliers, and officials from other government agencies on code enforcement matters.
Ability to review and interpret site plans, complex diagrams, drawings, and schematics.
Complete site visits, construction inspections, and fieldwork as necessary in support of project goals and objectives while ensuring compliance with safety requirements.
Prepare review/comment letters, engineering reports, business, and other correspondence as needed for client and external agency interactions.
Ability to manage workload and priorities independently in response to changing project requirements and schedules.
Demonstrated focus on client satisfaction and firm success, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to present information clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing, and respond effectively to questions from external parties.
Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and professionally to large groups and respond appropriately to challenging questions or comments.
