Job Responsibilities

• The Director of Engineering Operations is responsible for commissioning, operational readiness, and advanced technical troubleshooting related to new construction, renovations, and major system upgrades across JHHS and JHU SOM healthcare and research facilities. This role ensures that all building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, medical gas, fire suppression, and building automation systems perform as intended and comply with applicable regulatory requirements (such as The Joint Commission, NFPA, FGI, ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170, and AAALAC), as well as the operational demands of a highly complex, mission-critical academic medical center.

• The Director oversees engineering involvement from design review through construction, functional testing, system turnover, and post-occupancy troubleshooting. During construction administration the Director of Engineering Operations partners with the Director of Engineering Design to verify that design intent is achieved and systems are fully operational and maintainable.

• This role leads coordination of technical troubleshooting efforts for complex building systems, working closely with Facilities’ teams. The Director actively oversees and maintains facility condition assessments and multi-year deferred maintenance capital plans and supports long-term asset stewardship. The role also participates in the development, implementation, and execution of mission-critical standards and programs, including water management plans, air testing and balancing initiatives. The Director contributes to sustainability initiatives in collaboration with the Director of Engineering Design and participates in campus utility and infrastructure master planning efforts.

• The Director of Engineering Operations requires extensive technical expertise, strong organizational skills, and a willingness to collaborate, along with a thorough understanding of healthcare and research facility operations and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include supervising staff, planning and scheduling work, managing budgets, conducting analyses, preparing reports, and presenting information to a variety of stakeholders. The Director works closely with the Director of Engineering Design to ensure that operational experience and lessons learned meaningfully inform JHHS and SOM engineering standards and specifications.
• This position operates under the minimal supervision of the Executive Director, JHHS Facilities Management.

Salary Range:

• $145,000 to $200,000 per year. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• 10 or more years including 7 or more years related work experience in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
• Professional Engineer (PE) preferred
