Lee Health is seeking a System Medical Director of Physician Advisors!
Lee Health is a nonprofit organization with more than 17,000 employees, 4,500 volunteers, and more than 1,200 employed primary care and specialty care providers with multiple practice locations throughout Southwest Florida. The organization has four acute care hospitals and one specialty hospital that together house over 1,800 hospital beds.
Position Information:
Lee Health is seeking an experienced physician leader to serve as the System Physician Advisor Medical Director. This highly collaborative leadership role reports to the Chief Physician Executive for Hospital-Based Care and partners closely with executive leadership, physician advisors, medical staff leaders, revenue cycle teams, utilization management, case management, clinical documentation integrity, and operational leaders across the health system.
The System Physician Advisor Medical Director is responsible for advancing system-wide resource utilization, care management, discharge planning, and patient throughput initiatives while supporting the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. This physician leader will play a key role in ensuring appropriate patient status designation, medical necessity compliance, documentation integrity, denial prevention and mitigation, and the efficient utilization of healthcare resources across all Lee Health hospitals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide physician leadership and strategic oversight for utilization management, care coordination, and denial management initiatives
- Review escalated cases involving patient status determination, medical necessity, quality concerns, and utilization issues
- Collaborate with physician advisors, revenue cycle, case management, CDI, quality, and operational leaders to improve workflows, compliance, and outcomes
- Educate and support providers regarding CMS regulations, payer requirements, medical necessity criteria, and documentation best practices
- Analyze trends related to payer denials, avoidable delays, patient status assignment, and resource utilization to drive performance improvement
- Serve as Chair of the Lee Health Utilization Review Committee
- Participate in organizational quality improvement, patient throughput, and readmission reduction initiatives
- Develop educational curriculum and presentations for physicians, medical staff, and leadership related to physician advisory services and utilization management
- Create action plans and provide coaching to clinicians regarding compliance, patient status accuracy, and documentation improvement opportunities
This position is ideal for a physician leader with strong clinical and operational expertise, exceptional communication skills, and experience in physician advisory services, utilization management, quality improvement, and healthcare operations. Successful candidates will be passionate about physician education, mentorship, collaboration, and driving system-wide improvement initiatives.
Schedule & Structure:
- Full-time, 1.0 FTE non-clinical administrative leadership role
- Monday – Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- Weekend coverage rotation approximately once every 13 weeks
- Onsite presence required a minimum of three days per week
- Dedicated administrative assistant support provided
Qualifications:
- MD, DO, or MBBS degree required
- Active Florida medical license in good standing
- Minimum of five years of clinical practice experience, preferably in inpatient care settings
- Physician Advisor certification (ACPA-C or ABQAURP) required within 6–12 months of hire if not already obtained
- Prior experience in physician leadership, mentorship, clinician education, conflict resolution, and public speaking preferred
- Familiarity with InterQual, MCG criteria, and Epic preferred
