Description
The Payroll Officer serves as the district’s subject matter expert on payroll operations and compliance, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing for approximately 1,000 employees. This role provides strategic oversight of payroll systems, procedures, and internal controls, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and district policies. The Payroll Officer leads payroll staff, manages payroll-related systems and reporting, and advises district leadership on payroll practices, risks, and process improvements. This position requires a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, and independent judgment.
Requirements
Qualifications Required:
- Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of payroll experience, preferably in a public sector or school district setting
- Knowledge of federal and state payroll laws and regulations (e.g., IRS, FLSA, ACA)
- Ability to obtain WASBO Payroll and Benefits Certification within two (2) years of employment
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication in the English language, including correct grammar and spelling usage
- Legally eligible to work for any employer in the United States of America as verified by Form I-9
- Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
Qualifications Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or related field
- WASBO Payroll Certification or Certified Payroll Professional
- Experience with WSIPC and Skyward HR/Payroll systems
- Experience in a multi-union or public sector environment
